Protein is the building block of life and one of the most critical nutrients after bariatric surgery. The human body’s need for protein does not decrease despite the smaller size of the stomach making it quite difficult for a post-operative bariatric surgery patient to meet their needs. I have been working with bariatric surgery patients since 2003. In my experience, the best way for my patients to meet their protein needs, especially in the early months, is through supplementation with whey protein.
The whey protein isolate BiPro is consistent with what I recommend to patients because it is an excellent protein source with simple ingredients. It is the most pure whey protein available on the market, without fillers or protein blends that may be less nutritionally complete. Using BiPro is perfect because it blends seamlessly into recipes and is exceptionally clean in flavor. This makes it easy to extend the protein content of delicious, healthy, nutrient-dense recipes.
In my early years of practice, I kept waiting for standardized guidelines for diet advancement after surgery from the American Society of Bariatric Surgery (now the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery), but those guidelines have never come. All patients have different tolerances, different ways of cooking and chewing, and different rates of healing. I have worked with eight different surgeons that have about fifteen ways to advance diet depending on the type of surgery. The bottom line is that your surgeon has learned from experience what works, so trust your surgeon’s expertise and follow their recommendations.
For your convenience, we have color coded the recipes in this book to help the reader know which recipes can be used at what diet phase after surgery.
Many patients struggle to find recipes that have adequate protein yet still taste good. You will find that this cookbook meets both of those needs. Enjoy!
